Foundry 10GbE affordable, FESX424+2XG XFP

We have just received a large shipment of Foundry Gigabit copper switches, with Base Layer 3 support, AND….2 x 10Gbit fiber ports on them (aka 10GbE or just 10 gig)! These are fast wire-speed layer 2 switches, with base Layer 3 protocol support, and a nice selection of ports: 24 10/100/1000 copper, 4 x SFP gigabit, and 2 x 10GbE (XFP based). They support dual hot-swap power, AC or DC. We stock both, and we have stock of 10G-XFP-SR (multi-mode, 300 meters reach, 850nm) and 10G-XFP-LR (single mode, 10km reach, 1310 nm, aka LX)) XFPs too. Also offered is the upgrade key to put full layer 3 on them. Contact me for details on that, but you get all layer 3 protocol support (yes, BGP) that way, for an additional $825. We can also upgrade the DRAM, if you require more routes. The part number on these units is FESX424+2XG. More details: They support jumbo frames, so great for server clustering, and they support advanced multicast (http://www.foundrynet.com/pdf/wp-enterprise-multicast-deployment-guide.pdf), among other things. They have a switching capacity of 88Gbps, and a forwarding rate of 65 mpps (million packets per second). For ALL the details on this amazing switch:

We are offerring these at prices which translate into 65% off of the current list price! And they are in like new condition, and fully covered by our 90-day warranty. For a switch of this caliber, with 2 x 10G, this is a breakthrough. (A cisco with similar specs would be at least 2 times as much I figure)

Contact me to discuss a specific configuration, or to get current prices or quantity discounts.

Foundry Jetcore to be discontinued: good news, if you buy used

Foundry Networks has “end-of-life” plans for most of their Jetcore-based modular routers and switches (recall this is their 4th generation product, announced in 2001. Examples are J-FxGMR, J-BxGMR4 management, and all the accompanying J-xxxxx cards and chassis). This is the word I got from a Foundry source recently, and it comes as good news, and bad news, depending. If you buy or sell used equipment, its good news.

The Jetcore-based product line is still very desirable and capable, and sells well on the secondary market. Being discontinued means more of it is likely to come onto the used market, and this is good news. It also means that buying used will be the only way to procure some of the Jetcore gear at some point. But as I said, its still very capable gear, with lots of demand. I would imagine that the Jetcore asic will still be updated and used extensively in lots of “stackable” switches. So what’s the bad news? Well, if you are heavily invested in Jetcore already and need new gear, you will either be forced into used gear
