We have just received a large shipment of Foundry Gigabit copper switches, with Base Layer 3 support, AND….2 x 10Gbit fiber ports on them (aka 10GbE or just 10 gig)! These are fast wire-speed layer 2 switches, with base Layer 3 protocol support, and a nice selection of ports: 24 10/100/1000 copper, 4 x SFP gigabit, and 2 x 10GbE (XFP based). They support dual hot-swap power, AC or DC. We stock both, and we have stock of 10G-XFP-SR (multi-mode, 300 meters reach, 850nm) and 10G-XFP-LR (single mode, 10km reach, 1310 nm, aka LX)) XFPs too. Also offered is the upgrade key to put full layer 3 on them. Contact me for details on that, but you get all layer 3 protocol support (yes, BGP) that way, for an additional $825. We can also upgrade the DRAM, if you require more routes. The part number on these units is FESX424+2XG. More details: They support jumbo frames, so great for server clustering, and they support advanced multicast (http://www.foundrynet.com/pdf/wp-enterprise-multicast-deployment-guide.pdf), among other things. They have a switching capacity of 88Gbps, and a forwarding rate of 65 mpps (million packets per second). For ALL the details on this amazing switch:
http://www.foundrynet.com/products/enterprise/adv-conv-edge/fi-edge-x.html

We are offerring these at prices which translate into 65% off of the current list price! And they are in like new condition, and fully covered by our 90-day warranty. For a switch of this caliber, with 2 x 10G, this is a breakthrough. (A cisco with similar specs would be at least 2 times as much I figure)

Contact me to discuss a specific configuration, or to get current prices or quantity discounts.

Cisco Systems filled a lawsuit against Apple Computers on Wednesday over the name “iPhone,” which Cisco has had a trademark on since 2000. While Cisco’s focus has traditionally been on enterprise networking hardware, they have recently been looking to focus more on consumer electronics. The lawsuit was filled following Apple’s recent announcement and introduction of an iPod/cell phone hybrid device. In December of last year, Cisco announced the launch of a new Linksys VoIP phone which functions as a Skype handset.

Apple computer is no stranger to challenges over trademark infringement. The company was sued by the Beatles Apple Corps. label over use of a Granny Smith logo. Initially, Apple Computer settled in 1981 for $80,000 and a promise that they would not enter the music business. In 1989, the two companies clashed again and ultimately agreed on a $26 Million settlement in 1991.The settlement specified that Apple Computer would not have to remove its name and logo from iTunes and the iPod.

In the case of Cisco vs. Apple Computer, it is expected that the two will reach a mutually agreeable settlement. Sources believe that Cisco most likely launched their “iPhone” in an effort to force Apple to license the rights to the name. Well played, Cisco. Well played, indeed!

Just found this useful abstract on the verification of the Cisco 6509 switch, 7606 and 7609 Routers with VPN Services module. It also describes security requirements of FIPS 140-2, and how to operate them in a secure FIPS 140-2 mode.

According to the Wikipedia, the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication 140-2 is a U.S. government computer security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules. The FIPS 140-2 standard is an information technology security accreditation program for cryptographic modules produced by private sector vendors who seek to have their products certified for use in government departments and regulated industries. FIPS 140-2 defines four levels of security, simply named “Level 1″ to “Level 4″ (”1″ being the lowest levl, “4″ being the most stringent).

Just goes to show you, we talk a lot about this powerful piece of harware but justifiably so. This is one bad mama-jama. So yeah, if you’re using a 6500 series switch, your network is safe. We have a bunch more info on this blog as well as the main TAG site relating to the Cisco 6509. If you have one of these switches or a compatable module available for sale, we’d love to hear from you! We are always in hte market for this gear.

I was helping to explain the Cisco 6500 series switches to a new associate, and put together this brief explanation of a variety of configurations. I think other might find it helpful. – Chris

***
The Catalyst 6500 series of switches is a modular system. The four different chassis are WS-C6503 (3 slots), WS-C6506 (6 slots), WS-C6509 (9 slots), and WS-C6513 (you guessed it, 13 slots). The 6506 and 6509 are the two most popular, with the edge starting to go to the 6506 as more and more dense modules are becoming available. What that means is that within a given slot, you can fit more and more ports as Cisco shrinks down the size of the electronics. The 6506 is smaller than than the 6509 and due to the denser modules, is capable enough for many w/o taking up as much space. Here are some prices:

WS-C6506 — $2,995
WS-C6509 — $3,095

Each chassis can hold two power supplies, ranging from 1300 watts each up to 6000 watts each, I believe. The required wattage is dependent upon the caliber of modules installed into the chassis. The most common are 1300W, 2500W, and 3000W. The power supplies have their own slots and do not take up any of the -3, -6, -9, or -13 module slots in their respective chassis.

WS-CAC-1300W — $129
WS-CAC-2500W — $999
WS-CAC-3000W — $1,999

Each chassis must have one or two supervisor module(s). These days, the bare minimum is a SUP1A…on up to the bad-boy SUP720-3BXL.

WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE — $299
WS-X6K-SUP1A-MSFC — $499 (same as the module above, but with a Multi Switch Fabric Card bolted onto the motherboard)
WS-X6K-SUP2-2GE — $1,999
WS-X6K-SUP2-MSFC2 — $2,499 (same as the module above, but with a Multi Switch Fabric Card version 2 bolted onto the motherboard)
WS-SUP720 — $11,150
WS-SUP720-3B — $13,250
WS-SUP720-3BXL — $13,850

Then there are the I/O (input/output) modules themselves…these are what the supervisor modules control. There are a lot of them, so I will cover only some of the most common. The basics are as follows: 10/100Mbps (or Fast Ethernet, FE), 10/100/1000Mbps (or Gigabit Ethernet, GigE), and recently 10000Mbps (or 10 Gig). The slower ones are older, but still quite widely used. All speeds are technically available in copper (traditional wire) or fiber optic, referred to as “copper” and “fiber”, but FE is most commonly copper while 10 Gig is most commonly fiber. Gig E is about 50/50 copper and fiber and some of the modules themselves have modular “either/or” ports–can be copper or fiber, depending upon what receptacles you put in them. Here are some popular models, slowest to fastest:

In copper:

WS-X6348-RJ-45 — $615 (FE)
WS-X6548-RJ-45 — $1,400 (FE, switch fabric enabled)
WS-X6148-GE-TX — $5,300 (GigE)
WS-X6548-GE-TX — $7,400 (GigE, switch fabric enabled)
WS-X6748-GE-TX — $8,890 (GigE, 40Gbps total module performance)

In fiber (these ports can accept several different types of fiber receptacles (known as GBICs):

WS-X6408-GBIC — $1,395
WS-X6416-GBIC — $4,250
WS-X6516-GBIC — $5,850
WS-X6516A-GBIC — $8,750

In “either/or” (these ports can also accept several different types of receptacles (known as mini-GBICs) into their smaller, SFP (Small Form factor, Pluggable) ports, but not only are there GigE fiber and copper versions of these mini-GBICs, there are also 10 Gig fiber versions):

WS-X6724-SFP — $9,195
WS-X6748-SFP — $10,350

As I said, there are many more, but these are the most commonly-sold items. Here are a few basic packages:

WS-C6506 — $7,475
2x WS-CAC-1300W
1x WS-X6K-SUP2-MSFC2
1x WS-X6408-GBIC
