Why Quintum?
Most everyone is familiar with household names like Cisco for thier VoIP gateways solutions. However, New Jersey-based Quintum Technologies has quickly established itself as a robust and cost-effective VoIP solution for the enterprise network. Unlike traditional VoIP Gateways, Quintum’s Tenor product line, requires no additional trunk hardware or PBX re-programming. Their proprietary “MultiPath Switches” offer seamless integration within a customer’s existing network and transparently “drop” a VoIP solution in between a traditional PBX and router environments with little network modification. All completely transparent to the caller.

I stumbled across a blog for Robert I. Sutton, a professor of management science at Stanford University, who wrote a book called The No Asshole Rule, about the negative impact of bullies in management roles on both productivity as well as office environment. According to a review from publishers weekly, ” (Sutton) argues that assholes—those who deliberately make co-workers feel bad about themselves and who focus their aggression on the less powerful—poison the work environment, decrease productivity, induce qualified employees to quit and therefore are detrimental to businesses, regardless of their individual effectiveness.”
The modern corporate workplace is rife with power-starved,egomaniacs who derive their own self-importance from the domination of others. This is a all to common dynamic that many can relate to. Whether this behavior is the result of social conditioning or a conscious masochistic pleasure, simply put it’s bad for business. Reading about a phenomenon like this can also make you appreciate your small, friendly office environment even more.

I’ve always been impressed with Foundry’s Web Switch Management cards (WSM) for the ServerIron series of application load balancers (layer 4-7). And my customers rave about them too. They have the same ease-of-use and robust load balancing feature set as the ServerIronXL stackable (and then some), but with substantially more performance and flexibility. They feature 3 processing subsystems (except for the rare -1 version, which has only one), in addition to the separate management portion. This starts one out with triple the performance of a ServerIronXL, and gives some fault tolerance to the card as well.
Additionally, the WSM series goes into modular chassis, so I/O port cards can be selected to give you precisely the port type and count you need. The chassis also allows for more redundancy options within the unit (power, dual WSM, extra port cards etc.)
I was excited to get a WSM6 (SI-GT series) and couple NEW WSM7 in stock recently. The WSM7 particularly is amazing, and is called their “ultra-performance” WSM. It has 3 x 1.6Ghz processors’ for the load balancing, all with 512MB at their disposal. It can go into 3-slot GT chassis, 4 slot ServerIron 400 and 450 chassis, and 8-slot ServerIron 800 and 850 chassis. We have all these combinations and all the port cards too (J-B16GC, J-B16Gx, J-B48E etc). These are amazing units.
