We have just received a large shipment of Foundry Gigabit copper switches, with Base Layer 3 support, AND….2 x 10Gbit fiber ports on them (aka 10GbE or just 10 gig)! These are fast wire-speed layer 2 switches, with base Layer 3 protocol support, and a nice selection of ports: 24 10/100/1000 copper, 4 x SFP gigabit, and 2 x 10GbE (XFP based). They support dual hot-swap power, AC or DC. We stock both, and we have stock of 10G-XFP-SR (multi-mode, 300 meters reach, 850nm) and 10G-XFP-LR (single mode, 10km reach, 1310 nm, aka LX)) XFPs too. Also offered is the upgrade key to put full layer 3 on them. Contact me for details on that, but you get all layer 3 protocol support (yes, BGP) that way, for an additional $825. We can also upgrade the DRAM, if you require more routes. The part number on these units is FESX424+2XG. More details: They support jumbo frames, so great for server clustering, and they support advanced multicast (http://www.foundrynet.com/pdf/wp-enterprise-multicast-deployment-guide.pdf), among other things. They have a switching capacity of 88Gbps, and a forwarding rate of 65 mpps (million packets per second). For ALL the details on this amazing switch:

We are offerring these at prices which translate into 65% off of the current list price! And they are in like new condition, and fully covered by our 90-day warranty. For a switch of this caliber, with 2 x 10G, this is a breakthrough. (A cisco with similar specs would be at least 2 times as much I figure)
Contact me to discuss a specific configuration, or to get current prices or quantity discounts.

Foundry Networks has “end-of-life” plans for most of their Jetcore-based modular routers and switches (recall this is their 4th generation product, announced in 2001. Examples are J-FxGMR, J-BxGMR4 management, and all the accompanying J-xxxxx cards and chassis). This is the word I got from a Foundry source recently, and it comes as good news, and bad news, depending. If you buy or sell used equipment, its good news.
The Jetcore-based product line is still very desirable and capable, and sells well on the secondary market. Being discontinued means more of it is likely to come onto the used market, and this is good news. It also means that buying used will be the only way to procure some of the Jetcore gear at some point. But as I said, its still very capable gear, with lots of demand. I would imagine that the Jetcore asic will still be updated and used extensively in lots of “stackable” switches. So what’s the bad news? Well, if you are heavily invested in Jetcore already and need new gear, you will either be forced into used gear
Townsend Assets group recently closed a sizable Cisco liquidation in Europe. We currently have the following gear in stock and ready to ship anywhere on the globe.

Well, as we all know the Foundry MG8 is a big league switch/router, normally reserved for operations with huge budgets and lots of traffic. This is no longer the case since it is, as of this writing, available used! That’s right, used. If you haven’t seen the light and are stuck on buying new only, you may navigate away from this page now. But for those of you who realize a used router makes all kinds of economic and practical sense, and is for all intents as good as a new router, read on…..
We just shipped two well-optioned used MG8’s to our customer (a service provider) in the Netherlands, who is very pleased with their performance and features. A state-of-the-art switch fabric, high performance backplane and supervisor engine, 10GbE port density, and redundancy were all critical decisions for this customer. They also needed to keep within a budget. Mission accomplished.
The items we have available at this time are:
BIMG8-AC
BIMG8-MR
BIMG8-SFM
BIMG8-10GX4-V6-A
BIMG8-1GX20-SFP-V6
BIMG8-1GX40-SFP-V6
Feel free to contact me if you would like to consider deploying the Foundry MG8, and we can option and price one for you. Below is a fluffy blurb from Foundry on the MG8.

Well, this is great news for Foundry lovers. Foundry NetIron MLX routers are just starting to hit the secondary (ok, used) market. This is their current generation equipment! A lot of folks are still running-on/buying IronCore series (Gen. 1,2,3), and the Jetcore gear still has lots of legs (Gen. 4) , no question. But if you have really serious needs, NetIron MLX is the way to go. Of course you need the budget too….
Some details about NetIron MLX straight from Foundry:
“Built with Foundry’s state-of-the-art, fifth-generation, network-processor-based architecture and Terabit-scale switch fabrics, the Foundry NetIron MLX Series routers offer network planners a rich set of high-performance IPv4, IPv6, MPLS, and Multi-VRF capabilities as well as advanced Layer 2 switching capabilities……
The NetIron MLX Series includes the 4-slot NetIron MLX-4, 8-slot NetIron MLX-8, 16-slot NetIron MLX-16, and the 32-slot NetIron MLX-32. The series offers industry-leading port capacity and density with up to 128 10-GbE / 640 1-GbE ports per system, and up to 256 10-GbE / 1,280 1-GbE ports in a standard 7-foot rack.”
As you may know, NetIron is at the top of the Foundry product tree. The generation 5 gear has all the latest capabilities (Support for hitless software upgrades and graceful Multicast, MPLS, ISIS, BGP and OSPF restart, IPV6, 10GbE, lowest in-class power consumption and heat dissipation, just to name a few), and a backplane (with 40-GbE ready half slots and 100-GbE ready full slots) and architecture that will be relevant well into the future. I’m excited to start offerring these units to customers in February, at significant savings over new. Call me if you have questions.

Here’s a helpful, but not well published password recovery procedure for Foundry EdgeIron series Layer 2 switches. It differs from the process used on all their other models, probably because the EdgeIron is not of their own design (not sure who actually makes these for Foundry, no matter) This recovery procedure applies to models with part numbers starting in EIF, eg. EIF24G, EIF4802CF, EIF48G, EIF24GS, EIF48GS etc. So, if you have lost the password, and want to clear off the previous configuration and start anew, here it is:
1) establish a connection to the device on the console port
2) power the switch on, while holding down “ctrl-u” to access the system file menu (technically you can just hit “ctrl-u” in the one second time between powering on and it actually loading, but its hard to time it)
3) you have a few seconds to type the password for the file menu, it is… “mercury”; clear off the asteriks that may remain from holding “ctrl-u” down first.
4) select “D” to delete all user defined configurations
5) enter the file name of the file type that is “Config File” and confirm if asked to delete it
6) select “Q” to reload.
At this point it will boot normally, and the username and password for the unit will be at default, “admin” and “admin”. Its back to default now, have fun. I have no idea why Foundry barely documents this process. Even the users manual doesn’t tell you the password to enter the ROM menu (”mercury”), it sais to call tech support to get it.
I hope this helps some folks…..
