I’ve always been impressed with Foundry’s Web Switch Management cards (WSM) for the ServerIron series of application load balancers (layer 4-7). And my customers rave about them too. They have the same ease-of-use and robust load balancing feature set as the ServerIronXL stackable (and then some), but with substantially more performance and flexibility. They feature 3 processing subsystems (except for the rare -1 version, which has only one), in addition to the separate management portion. This starts one out with triple the performance of a ServerIronXL, and gives some fault tolerance to the card as well.
Additionally, the WSM series goes into modular chassis, so I/O port cards can be selected to give you precisely the port type and count you need. The chassis also allows for more redundancy options within the unit (power, dual WSM, extra port cards etc.)
I was excited to get a WSM6 (SI-GT series) and couple NEW WSM7 in stock recently. The WSM7 particularly is amazing, and is called their “ultra-performance” WSM. It has 3 x 1.6Ghz processors’ for the load balancing, all with 512MB at their disposal. It can go into 3-slot GT chassis, 4 slot ServerIron 400 and 450 chassis, and 8-slot ServerIron 800 and 850 chassis. We have all these combinations and all the port cards too (J-B16GC, J-B16Gx, J-B48E etc). These are amazing units.
