In March of 2006, a team from the university of Tokyo set a new record for Internet2 Land Speed in both the IPv6 and IPv4 single and multi-stream categories.
This record represents the fastest rate at which data can be transferred, multiplied by the distance traveled. Using three Foundry NetIron 40G IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack routers configured with 10-Gigabit Ethernet Wide Area Network Physical Layer Interfaces (10-GbE WAN PHY), the international team was able to transfer data at a rate of 7.99 Gbps which is equal to 239,820 terabit-meters per second across a network path spanning over 30,000 kilometers and crossing 8 international networks. This achievement beat the previous record by over 10.75%.
