That’s how Foundry aptly describes the FastIron GS, their current feature rich stackable switches that rival anything the guys at Cisco have yet offered. The P means they can be upgraed to support 802.3af PoE with a field-upgradable DIMM and an optional 10GbE uplink. With modular power supplies and a slim 1.5 RU profile, these IPv6 ready switches are making people take notice.
While we haven’t yet seen very many of the FastIron GS series switches on the secondary market, we just landed a clean pair that are ready to move. If you’re considering the FLS series, you might want to reconsider. These are their more robust big brother.

The latest generation BigIron RX series Layer2/Layer3 switches from Foundry are proving to be even more popular with our customers than their predecessor (the B4000/B8000 “Jetcore” series). And while we still sell the Jetcore series, and they are still capable for many budget-constrained uses, the RX series is substantially better in virtually all ways. They are smaller physically (greater port density), have impressive reduced power requirements, support total redundancy within the chassis, and are non-blocking on all module slots at up to 40Gb/sec. Of course the code base is highly evolved and stable. These are some of the many reasons they are ideal for aggregation and backbone switching. The management (supervisor) also supports 2GB of DRAM, and as such is scalable to 4 million routes, 256 peers and 14,000 attributes (BGPv4). In a nutshell, they come in 4, 8 , 16 and even 32 (!) slot versions, and support redundant management, fabric and power. They support all layer 2 protocols, and all major layer 3 protocols (not MPLS, but technically that’s not Layer 3!? You need MLX or XMR if you require MPLS support) There are 24-port copper, fiber, 48-port telco copper, and 2 and 4 port 10GbE modules that are compatible across all the chassis. We have had great success selling the entire line of Foundry ServerIron Application load balancers over the last 6 years in business here at Townsend Networks. At the very high end (and high budget) SOME folks seem to prefer F5 Networks boxes, but thats a topic for debate elsewhere.
