Questions and answers
- What is the difference between the ASR1001-X and the ASR1002-X?
- Both have the Embedded Services Processor built in, so neither can take a faster ESP later. The ASR1001-X has six 1GE SFP ports and two 10GE SFP+ ports built in, one half-height SPA bay and one NIM bay, and forwards 2.5 Gbps as standard, licensable to 5, 10 or 20 Gbps. The ASR1002-X has six built-in 1GE SFP ports and three half-height SPA bays, and forwards 5 Gbps as standard, licensable to 10, 20 or 36 Gbps. Cisco rates hardware encryption at up to 8 Gbps on the ASR1001-X and up to 4 Gbps on the ASR1002-X.
- Does a used ASR1001-X or ASR1002-X come with its throughput licence?
- Throughput on these routers is a Cisco software licence, not a hardware option: without a higher licence the ASR1001-X runs at 2.5 Gbps and the ASR1002-X at 5 Gbps. Software licences and Cisco support contracts are not part of our warranty, so ask us which throughput level a unit shows before you order.
- Are the ASR1001-X, ASR1002-X and ASR1004 end of life?
- Yes. Cisco's notice for the ASR1001-X and ASR1002-X set the end-of-sale date at 1 August 2022 and the last date of support at 31 July 2027, names IOS XE 17.9 as the last supported release and points to the Catalyst 8500 series as the replacement. The ASR1004 reached end of sale on 29 April 2020 and its last date of support was 30 April 2025; Cisco named the ASR1002-HX and ASR1006-X as its replacements.
- What does an ASR1004 chassis need to run?
- The ASR1004 is modular. It runs with one route processor (RP1 or RP2), one Embedded Services Processor (ESP10, ESP20 or ESP40) and two SPA interface processors (SIP10 or SIP40) that carry the SPA port adapters, plus two power supplies, AC or DC but never one of each. Each listing says what ships with it, so check which modules are fitted before you order, or ask us.
- What condition and warranty come with a Cisco ASR 1000 router from Townsend?
- Each listing prints its own condition. Units sold as new, refurbished or used are bench tested before they are listed: every port and module slot is checked and the previous owner's configuration is erased. They are covered by the Townsend warranty from the date of delivery; if the hardware fails in normal use we repair it or replace it with a tested unit, and the length and terms are on our warranty page. Unused hardware can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Cisco software licences and support contracts are not part of our warranty.
