Are the Catalyst 4500-X and 4500E parts end of life?

Yes. Cisco's notice for the Catalyst 4500-X, including the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ and WS-C4500X-40X-ES, set end of sale on 30 October 2020 and the last date of support on 31 October 2025, with the Catalyst 9500 as the replacement. Cisco's 4500E notice gives the Supervisor Engine 8-E and the WS-X4748-UPOE+E the same dates, end of sale 30 October 2020 and last date of support 31 October 2025, and names Catalyst 9400 parts as replacements.

What is the difference between the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ and the WS-C4500X-40X-ES?

Port count and software. Cisco describes the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ as a 32-port 10GbE switch with IP Base and the WS-C4500X-40X-ES as a 40-port 10GbE switch with Enterprise Services. Both have front-to-back airflow and were sold by Cisco without power supplies; each listing's What's included section says what ships.

The Cisco WS-C4500X-40X-ES is a switch from the Cisco C4500X family with 40 ports of 1/10GbE SFP+ and front-to-back airflow. This unit is refurbished (used): inspected, powered on and functionally tested by Townsend Networks technicians before listing. One unit per order.

HOW IT DIFFERS: WS-C4500X-40X-ES is the Catalyst 4500-X in its 40-port 10GE Enterprise Services form, with front-to-back cooling and no power supply in the box. Cisco lists an 8-port 10GE network module, C4KX-NM-8SFP+, as the optional addition to the 32-port base, and the same data sheet gives the 4500-X up to 800 Gbps of system throughput and dual power supplies. Its sister WS-C4500X-32SFP+ is the 32-port IP Base unit.

How the WS-C4500X-40X-ES differs from the WS-C4500X-32SFP+

Cisco's Catalyst 4500-X data sheet lists the WS-C4500X-40X-ES as a 40 port 10GE switch with Enterprise Services and front-to-back cooling, with no power supply, and the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ as a 32 port 10GE switch with IP Base, also front-to-back and also without a power supply. The listing separates them by port count and by software feature set. The data sheet describes IP Base as all Layer 2 features and some basic Layer 3 features, and Enterprise Services as full Layer 3 protocols and advanced features such as complete routing scalability, upgradable with a Software Activation License.

Cisco lists the base ports as 10GE SFP+/SFP, and the SFP+ ports also take 1 Gigabit Ethernet optics. Power supplies are ordered separately: the C4KX-PWR-750AC-R is the 750 W AC supply with front-to-back cooling, and the back-to-front supply is the C4KX-PWR-750AC-F. The data sheet lists no back-to-front version of the 40 port model. Two Catalyst 4500-X switches of the same model can be pooled into a Virtual Switching System, up to two switches, which needs Cisco IOS XE Release 3.4.0SG or later. System throughput is up to 800 Gbps, with IPv4 routing in hardware of up to 250 Mpps.
