Rack Power and Heat Calculator: Watts to BTU/hr

Add the switches going into a rack and get the most they draw in watts, the current at your supply voltage, and the heat to plan cooling for, in BTU per hour.

Watts (334 W): Arista 7050X3 Series Data Sheet, Arista Networks (Sept 4, 2026 03-0040-46; page 8, Specifications, row "Typical/Max Power", column 7050CX3-32C (the second figure)). 165W / 334W The maker's note: Typical power consumption measured at 25C ambient with 50% load on all ports, excludes transceivers

Heat: the maker prints no BTU per hour figure for this model, so it is 334 W times 3.41, the factor below.

Watts to BTU per hour (3.41): MX204 Power Planning, Juniper Networks (web page, no revision printed; Calculating System Thermal Output, the sentence after "you can use that information to determine the system thermal output (BTUs per hour)."). To do so, multiply the power consumption in watts by 3.41.

How it works

Watts are the most each switch draws as its maker states it. For a PoE switch, some makers count the power sent to the PoE devices in that figure and some leave it out; the source line under each switch says which.

Heat is the maker's own BTU per hour figure where the maker prints one. Where it does not, the watts are multiplied by 3.41, the factor in the maker's power planning guide.

Current is the total watts divided by the supply voltage you pick. These are planning figures from the makers' documents; the circuit and the cooling are sized by your electrician and facilities team against the maker's installation guide.
