Juniper MX240 and MX480 End of Life: Which Parts and Bundles Are Retired

The Juniper MX240 and MX480 have no end-of-life date as platforms. Juniper's own table of MX hardware milestones carries no end-of-life notice for the MX240 or MX480 chassis part numbers. What it does carry is a long list of bundles and parts for those two routers that have been retired one notice at a time: the Premium3 bundles, the older routing engines, the first power supplies and the first fan trays.

So the question for an MX240 or MX480 is never "is the router end of life". It is "which of the parts in this router are", and the answer depends on how the chassis was built.

The dates

These rows are taken from Juniper's M and MX Series hardware dates and milestones page, read on October 28, 2026.

For the Premium3 bundles Juniper gives two more dates: end of hardware failure analysis on June 30, 2022 and end of engineering on June 30, 2026. Every date in that row has now passed.

What Juniper's columns mean

Juniper's milestone table has six date columns, and each one ends a different part of Juniper's commitment:

  • EOL announced: the day the technical support bulletin is published.
  • Last order: the last day Juniper takes an order for the part.
  • End of hardware failure analysis: Juniper stops investigating why a returned unit failed.
  • End of engineering: Juniper stops developing software fixes for the part.
  • Last software version: the last Junos release that supports it, where Juniper names one.
  • End of support: the last day Juniper's support center takes a case and the last day a support contract covers the part.

A renaming bulletin is a different kind of notice. TSB107033 and TSB111054 are titled SKU renaming announcements: they retire a part number as an orderable name, with its own last order date, and the table gives those names an end-of-support date of June 30, 2027.

Why the parts matter more than the chassis

An MX240 or MX480 is a chassis with slots. The same chassis can hold routing engines, switch control boards, line cards, fan trays and power supplies from several generations, and Juniper retires each of those parts on its own schedule. Two MX480 routers bought years apart can sit at very different points in Juniper's lifecycle while sharing the same chassis part number.

Three parts set the date for most units:

  • The routing engine. The RE-S-2000-4096, RE-S-1300-2048 and RE-S-1800X2 generations are all past end of support. A router built on one of them is past Juniper's support for its control plane, whatever the chassis.
  • The fan trays. The original FFANTRAY-MX240-S and FFANTRAY-MX480-S reached end of support in February 2019. The high-capacity trays that followed them are still current: Juniper's October 15, 2026 renaming bulletin sets April 15, 2027 as the last order date for the FFANTRAY-MX480-HC-S under that name.
  • The power supplies. The PWR-MX480-1200-AC and PWR-MX480-1600-DC reached end of support in October 2020. Later supplies, such as the 2400 and 2520 watt models, have no notice on the same table.

Read in date order, the table shows Juniper retiring MX240 and MX480 parts in waves rather than all at once: the first fan trays were announced in 2013, the early routing engines and first power supplies in 2014, the RE-S-1800X4-8G in 2015, the Premium3 bundles in 2020 and the power and fan upgrade kits in 2025.

The bundles follow the same logic. A Premium3 bundle such as the MX480-PREM3-AC was a set of parts sold under one part number, and Juniper retired that bundle name with an end of support on June 30, 2026. The parts inside a bundle keep their own dates.

What the dates change, and what they do not

A router does not stop forwarding traffic on an end-of-support date. The dates describe Juniper's side: new software fixes, support cases, failure analysis and replacement under a Juniper contract. An MX480 that runs well today keeps running the same way.

What the dates change is planning. Before buying or keeping an MX240 or MX480, list the routing engines, control boards, fan trays and power supplies it holds, and check each against Juniper's table. The earliest date among them is the date that matters for anything that needs Juniper.

What we list

The Juniper MX240 page and the Juniper MX480 page hold chassis, bundles and parts for both routers. Part numbers listed today include:

Each unit is tested in-house before it ships, and anything not listed can be quoted, including a chassis built to a list of parts.

Quick answers

Are the Juniper MX240 and MX480 end of life?

Not as platforms. Juniper's MX hardware milestone table has no end-of-life notice for the MX240 or MX480 chassis part numbers. Specific bundles and parts for both routers have been retired.

When did the MX480-PREM3 bundles reach end of support?

June 30, 2026, for the MX480-PREM3-AC and MX480-PREM3-DC, and the same day for the MX240-PREM3 and P3-SCBE2 bundles. Juniper announced them in June 2020.

Which MX240 and MX480 power supplies are past end of support?

The PWR-MX480-1200-AC and PWR-MX480-1600-DC, since October 31, 2020. The 2400 and 2520 watt supplies have no notice on the same table.

Does an MX480 stop working when a part reaches end of support?

No. It keeps forwarding traffic. What ends is Juniper's side: software fixes, support cases, failure analysis and replacement under a Juniper contract.

Does Townsend Networks still sell MX240 and MX480 chassis and parts?

Yes. Listings are on the Juniper MX240 and MX480 pages, tested in-house before they ship, and anything not listed can be quoted.
