Questions and answers

Are the Catalyst 4500-X and 4500E parts end of life?
Yes. Cisco's notice for the Catalyst 4500-X, including the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ and WS-C4500X-40X-ES, set end of sale on 30 October 2020 and the last date of support on 31 October 2025, with the Catalyst 9500 as the replacement. Cisco's 4500E notice gives the Supervisor Engine 8-E and the WS-X4748-UPOE+E the same dates, end of sale 30 October 2020 and last date of support 31 October 2025, and names Catalyst 9400 parts as replacements.
What is the difference between the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ and the WS-C4500X-40X-ES?
Port count and software. Cisco describes the WS-C4500X-32SFP+ as a 32-port 10GbE switch with IP Base and the WS-C4500X-40X-ES as a 40-port 10GbE switch with Enterprise Services. Both have front-to-back airflow and were sold by Cisco without power supplies; each listing's What's included section says what ships.
Which Catalyst 4500E chassis slots take the Supervisor Engine 8-E?
Cisco supports the Supervisor Engine 8-E in E-Series chassis only: slot 1 of the 4503-E and 4506-E, slot 3 or 4 of the 4507R+E, and slot 5 or 6 of the 4510R+E. The 4507R+E and 4510R+E support two supervisors for redundancy.
What does UPOE mean on the WS-X4748-UPOE+E?
Cisco Universal PoE. The WS-X4748-UPOE+E is a 48-port 10/100/1000 RJ-45 line card that supports 802.3af PoE, 802.3at PoE+ and UPOE, and Cisco's Supervisor Engine 8-E data sheet rates UPOE at 60 W on all line card slots.
What condition and warranty come with a Cisco Catalyst 4500 part from Townsend?
Each listing prints its own condition. Units sold as new, refurbished or used are bench tested before they are listed: every port and module slot is checked and the previous owner's configuration is erased. They are covered by the Townsend warranty from the date of delivery; if the hardware fails in normal use we repair it or replace it with a tested unit, and the length and terms are on our warranty page. Unused hardware can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Cisco software licences and support contracts are not part of our warranty.
