Arista Hardware Guide: 7050X3, 7280R3 and More

Updated

Arista's data center switches share one operating system, EOS, and a naming scheme that rewards slow reading: the family, the port layout, the airflow and sometimes a route-scale letter all sit in one part number. This guide collects what Townsend knows about the Arista families we list, with dates and specifications from Arista's data sheets and end-of-sale notices, which the articles linked here name.

The shelves below go to what is in stock. For a part that is not shown, request a quote and a person checks the warehouse.

7050X3 and 7280R3

Two families get confused because their part numbers look alike. The 7050X3 is a low-latency leaf and spine switch with a 32 MB shared buffer. The 7280R3 is a deep-buffer switch router for peering, interconnect and carrier edge, with models up to 24 ports of 400G. The DCS-7050SX3-48YC8 and the DCS-7280SR3-48YC8 have the same port layout and are not the same switch. Arista 7050X3 and 7280R3 Families Explained sets them side by side, model by model.

Shelves: 7050X3, 7050, 7280, 7060X, 7160, 7500 and DAC cables.

Reading an Arista part number

Read DCS-7050SX3-48YC8-F in parts: the family and generation (7050SX3), the port layout (48YC8 is 48 ports of 25G SFP and 8 ports of 100G QSFP) and the airflow.

  • -F: front to rear. Air flows from the port side to the fan side.
  • -R: rear to front. Air flows from the fan side to the port side.
  • A hash at the end: sold with configurable fans and power supplies, chosen at order time.
  • K in a 7280R3 number: the large route version, with over 5 million IPv4 routes against over 2 million.
  • C at the end of 7050SX3-48YC8C: the version Arista names as the replacement for the 48YC8.

Fans and power supplies must all match the switch's airflow, and a spare fan or power supply has a direction of its own. Arista's -F matches Juniper's AFO and -R matches AFI, which the Juniper guide and airflow suffixes explained lay out.

End of sale dates

  • 7050SX3-48YC8 and 7050SX3-48C8: last order December 31, 2026, support to December 31, 2031. See Arista 7050SX3-48YC8 End of Sale.
  • 7050CX3-32S: sale ended March 20, 2026, support to March 20, 2031.
  • 7060CX, 7060CX2 and 7060SX2-48YC6: sale ended October 1, 2026, support to October 1, 2031. See Arista 7060CX and 7060SX2 End of Sale.
  • 7280SR3K-48YC8: sale ended October 10, 2026, support to October 10, 2031.
  • 7050SX, 7050SX2 and 7050QX2: sale ended March 20, 2022 and support ended March 20, 2025.

An end of sale date closes Arista's order book and does not stop a switch working. After it, a matching unit comes from used, refurbished or open box stock, and a unit you are retiring can go to us. For the other makers we list, see the guides for Juniper, Brocade and Ruckus and Cisco.

Arista questions

What do -F and -R mean on an Arista part number?

They name the airflow. Front to rear (-F) moves air from the port side to the fan side, and rear to front (-R) moves it the other way. Choose the one whose intake side faces your cold aisle, and match every fan and power supply to it.

What is the difference between the Arista 7050X3 and the 7280R3?

The 7050X3 is a low-latency data center switch with a 32 MB shared buffer and 360K IPv4 routes. The 7280R3 is a deep-buffer switch router with gigabytes of buffer, over 2 million IPv4 unicast routes and models up to 24 ports of 400G.

Is the Arista 7050SX3-48YC8 end of sale?

Arista's notice sets the last order date for the 7050SX3-48YC8 and 7050SX3-48C8 at December 31, 2026, with support to December 31, 2031. The switches keep working after those dates.

What replaces the Arista 7050SX3-48YC8?

Arista's notice names the DCS-7050SX3-48YC8C as the replacement for the 48YC8, and the DCS-7050SX3-48C8C for the 48C8.

Can I mix -F and -R fans and power supplies in one Arista switch?

No. Arista's guidance is to verify that each module has the same airflow direction as the switch. A spare fan or power supply has its own direction, so match it to the switch it goes into.

Do you buy Arista switches?

Yes. Send the list of parts you are retiring through the sell page and a person replies with an offer.
