Cisco Hardware Guide: Catalyst, Nexus, ASR and ASA

Updated

The Cisco hardware we list runs from current Catalyst 9000 platforms to lines that left sale years ago, and a part number alone does not always show which. This guide collects what Townsend knows about the Cisco families we list: what each family is for, where Cisco's end-of-sale and end-of-support dates stand, and what the letters in a part number change. Dates come from Cisco's notices, which the articles linked here name.

The shelves below go to what is in stock. For a part that is not shown, request a quote and a person checks the warehouse.

Cisco in stock

Catalyst campus switches

The Catalyst 9300 is a stackable fixed switch and the Catalyst 9400 is a modular chassis with redundant supervisors. Cisco Catalyst 9300 vs 9400 sets them side by side. The older lines have shelves of their own: Catalyst 2960, 3560, 3650 and 4948, Catalyst 4500 and Catalyst 6500.

In the WS-C2960X family the S or D before the dash is the uplink: the WS-C2960X-48FPS-L has four 1G SFP uplinks and the WS-C2960X-48FPD-L has two 10G SFP+ uplinks.

Dates to know:

  • Catalyst 9400 Supervisor 1: sale ended April 30, 2025, support to April 30, 2030.
  • Catalyst 2960-X: sale ended October 31, 2022, support to October 31, 2027. See Cisco Catalyst 2960-X End of Support.
  • Catalyst 2960-L: sale ended October 31, 2021, support to October 31, 2026.
  • Catalyst 4500-X, 4500E supervisors and line cards, and 6500-E chassis with Supervisor 2T: sale ended October 30, 2020 and support ended October 31, 2025.

Nexus data center switches

The Nexus family is Cisco's data center line, with shelves for Nexus 9000, Nexus 3000 and the whole Nexus range. The Nexus 93180YC-EX ended sale on August 9, 2022 and its support runs to August 31, 2027. See Cisco Nexus 93180YC-EX and 9372 End of Life.

ASR routers and ASA firewalls

The ASR 1000 and ASR 9000 are Cisco's service provider routers, with shelves for ASR 1000 and ASR 9000, and the ASA is its firewall line, on the ASA shelf.

After end of sale

An end-of-sale date closes Cisco's order book and does not stop a switch or router working. What ends is the maker's side: new software fixes, support cases and replacement under a maker contract. The dates for every family are in Cisco end of life deadlines 2026 to 2028. For the other makers we list, see the guides for Juniper, Arista and Brocade and Ruckus. To sell Cisco gear you are retiring, send us the list.

Cisco questions

What is the difference between the Cisco Catalyst 9300 and 9400?

The Catalyst 9300 is a fixed 1RU switch that stacks up to 8 members. The Catalyst 9400 is a modular chassis with 4, 7 or 10 slots, two supervisor slots in a 1+1 pair and redundant power, with up to 384 copper ports in one chassis.

Is the Cisco Catalyst 2960-X end of life?

Yes. Cisco's notice set end of sale on October 31, 2022 and the last date of support on October 31, 2027, with the Catalyst 9200L named as the replacement. The switches keep working after those dates.

What is the difference between the WS-C2960X-48FPS-L and the WS-C2960X-48FPD-L?

Only the uplinks. Both have 48 Gigabit copper ports with PoE+, a 740W PoE budget and the LAN Base feature set. The 48FPS-L has four 1G SFP uplinks and the 48FPD-L has two 10G SFP+ uplinks.

Is the Cisco ASA 5508-X still supported?

Cisco's support for the ASA 5508-X and ASA 5516-X ended on August 31, 2026. The firewalls keep working, and what ended is Cisco's side: software fixes and support cases.

Is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 Supervisor 1 end of sale?

Yes. Cisco ended sale of the C9400-SUP-1 on April 30, 2025 and ends support on April 30, 2030. Cisco names the C9400X-SUP-2 as the replacement.

Can I buy Cisco hardware after its end of sale date?

Yes. The hardware keeps working after the date, and used, refurbished and open box stock is how a fleet adds a matching unit. Cisco software licences and support contracts are separate from the hardware.
